Australia lowers Modern Slavery Act threshold and mandates due diligence

Parliament House in Canberra, Australia

Canberra adopts key recommendations of the statutory review, dropping the reporting threshold to A$50 million and introducing penalties administered by the Anti-Slavery Commissioner.

The Australian Government has legislated the most significant reform of its Modern Slavery Act since 2018, halving the revenue threshold and converting voluntary due diligence guidance into a mandatory duty for reporting entities.

An estimated 2,400 additional companies enter scope. The federal Anti-Slavery Commissioner gains powers to issue infringement notices for missing or materially deficient statements.
