A five-year academic review of corporate grievance channels finds most complaints stall before remedy, and identifies the design features that separate effective mechanisms.

Researchers reviewing 14,000 supply chain grievances across 40 multinationals found only 22% reached a documented remedy. Mechanisms with worker involvement in design, native-language access and published resolution timelines performed three times better.

The study urges companies to treat the UN Guiding Principles' effectiveness criteria as engineering requirements rather than aspirations, and to report resolution rates alongside complaint volumes.
