Forensic origin testing, once reserved for disputed shipments, is being written into supplier contracts as standard verification for high-risk cotton supply chains.

Major apparel groups are now testing a statistical sample of finished goods each season using isotopic and trace-element analysis to verify declared cotton origin, closing the gap between paper-based chain of custody and physical reality.

Testing labs report that mismatch rates between declared and detected origin have fallen from 18% to 7% in two years — evidence, they argue, that verification changes supplier behaviour.
